Extreme events - such as heatwaves, flooding, droughts, wild-fires, tsunamis and earthquakes – already occur and some are happening more frequently and with more intensity. These events damage and destroy homes and communities; owners and occupiers suffer physically, mentally and financially, and society must cope. Existing and new (yet to be built) housing needs to be made resilient against these events (or as near as possible) and will need to be repaired or replaced post-event. In addition, and importantly, victims and communities will need support.
This conference will consider the initial human response to an Extreme Event; the aftermath within 3-4 months; the subsequent means of re-establishing housing and neighbourhoods; the potential for prevention and the role of neighbourhood resilience.
An international Advisory Group has been established with a view to holding the conference online in September 2024.
We are interested to hear from any organisations wishing to be involved in the conference, and especially from those able to offer sponsorship. Please contact Zena Lynch at z.lynch@bham.ac.uk
